Looking for a delicious way to get your omega-3 on a vegan or plant-based diet? These bites are made with walnuts and flax to help you get what you need. They’re hearty, nutritious and perfectly sweet thanks to dates and a touch of vanilla and cinnamon.

Omega-3 on a Plant-Based Diet

If you’re following a vegan or vegetarian diet, you can get omega-3 from an algae-based supplement or from eating flax seeds, hemp hearts, chia seeds and/or walnuts.

I recommend my plant-based clients to aim for 2-3 tablespoons of flax, hemp hearts or chia seeds every day, or to eat 1/4 cup of walnuts. This is a good way to get the nutrients that you need if you prefer not to take an omega-3 supplement. Plus, these nuts and seeds are very nutritious and offer many benefits, whether you’re on a plant-based diet or not!

I created these bites to have a convenient and delicious way to get these nuts and seeds daily. One serving contains approximately half of my recommended nut and seed amount per day!

How to Store Walnut Flax Energy Bites

These bites can be eaten straight from the freezer and will remain a little soft thanks to the dates. They will stay fresh in the freezer for months if stored in an airtight container. You can also store them in the fridge for 5-7 days.

Ingredient Substitutions

  • You can substitute the walnuts for other nuts, such as cashews, pecans or almonds.
  • Feel free to use either rolled oats or quick oats.
  • This recipe was tested with Medjool dates. If your dates are dry, you might need to add water at the end to help the bites hold together.
