Glowing Green Spirulina Smoothie

A beautiful glowing green spirulina smoothie. This drink gets its glowing blue-green color from a simple combination of kale, blueberries and spirulina. All you need is 5 ingredients and 5 minutes!

This was an unexpected recipe.

I made this glowing green spirulina smoothie with no intention of taking pictures. When I blended the ingredients (without measuring the ingredients of course), I discovered this beautiful mermaid color! I knew I had to share it here.

The only problem, like I said, is that I didn’t measure the ingredients… I did try to recreate the recipe as much as I could and I think I came up with a similar result after a few tries.

Glowing Green Spirulina Smoothie Ingredients:

  • Banana: This recipe uses a frozen banana to thicken the recipe and add sweetness.
  • Blueberries: These add sweetness to the recipe, plus contribute to the beautiful blue-green color.
  • Kale: This hearty leafy green adds fiber and nutrients to the smoothie. Plus, it’s another important part of color.
  • Soy Milk: I use plain and unsweetened soy milk to add protein to the smoothie. You could try this recipe with other plant-based milks if preferred.
  • Spirulina: The final and most important ingredient. Spirulina powder adds to the beautiful color of the smoothie.

What is Spirulina?

Spirulina is a blue-green algae powder that’s often considered a superfood (a word that I avoid using) due to it’s nutrient content and supposed health benefits. While we can’t trust everything that we read on the internet, we do know that spirulina is rich in nutrients. It’s a source of antioxidants and is said to have inflammation-fighting properties. You can buy spirulina powder or capsules.

How to Use Spirulina:

The easiest (and tastiest) way to use spirulina is to add it to smoothies. If you aren’t used to spirulina, you might find that it has a bit of an aftertaste. For this reason, it’s best to start with a smaller amount, about half a teaspoon, and gradually increase the quantity. In this recipe, we’re using 1 teaspoon to get the beautiful blue-green color, so you shouldn’t get a strong spirulina flavor from this smoothie.

Some people also drink spirulina as a shot mixed with water, but I don’t see myself trying that anytime soon!

Glowing Green Spirulina Smoothie FAQ:

Can I Use Another Milk?

If you don’t have soy milk or prefer to use another milk, you can swap it for any other plain and unsweetened plant-based milk. Keep in mind that it will change the flavor of the smoothie, but the color should stay the same (or close to the same).

Can I Use Spinach Instead of Kale?

You can use spinach instead of kale, but it might affect the color of the smoothie.

Do the Fruits Need to Be Frozen?

Yes! This smoothie is made with frozen fruits to thicken the smoothie and to make it cold and icy.

That being said, I hope you’ll love this smoothie and its beautiful color as much as I do!

Notes

Spirulina has a particular taste. I didn’t add a lot in this smoothie, so you shouldn’t taste it, but if you’re not used to spirulina, you can start with half a teaspoon and increase gradually. This will affect the color of the smoothie.
I used fresh wild blueberries that I froze myself. If you use store-bought frozen blueberries, the color of the smoothie might be different.

  • Hello! I'm excited to start giving Spirulina a try, and I'm not sure if you can suggest a brand or not, but I'd love your input. As you imply, you can't trust everything on the internet, and since there's a lot of spirulina out there, knowing your trusted or preferred vendor(s) would be helpful. Thank you!

    • Hi Emily, that's a great question! I've personally only bought spirulina from a local health food store where they sell it in bulk. So unfortunately, I can't suggest any specific brands. I would maybe stick to a local store you trust instead of buying it on the internet. Unfortunately, these types of foods aren't well regulated to my knowledge, so you can't be guaranteed of the quality. On the bright side, it will add a pretty color to your smoothies. The possibility of having some health benefits from spirulina is just a bonus. Or at least that's how I see it. I'm sorry I'm not much help, but with all of those "superfoods" and supplements, you can sadly never be sure of the quality and the research is still new. I hope you'll still enjoy the smoothie though!

  • The Smoothie tastes great, but it turned Grey. I used Chlorella instead of spirulina. Was that my mistake? I've chosen the Smoothie because of the beautiful color.

    Thanks for Help!
    Janine

    • Hi Janine, I'm happy that you liked the recipe! But yes, chlorella will not give this smoothie the same color as spirulina unfortunately. The spirulina has a lovely blue-green color that pairs well with the color of blueberries. But chlorella is more green. I find that any small change to the recipe can change the beautiful color. Sorry that happened!
