Looking for a nourishing cozy drink to warm up? This blender hot cocoa is made with 3 simple plant-based ingredients: Almond butter, dates and cocoa. When blended with hot water and an optional pinch of salt, you get a creamy and lightly sweet chocolate drink.
This recipe was originally shared in 2019 and has been updated with new photos and extra details. The original version of this post was written in a cozy cafe in Austria. I’m now updating it in our Vancouver apartment. A lot has changed and this recipe holds a lot of memories. I hope that you will enjoy it as much as I do.
Here are the steps to make a homemade vegan hot cocoa in the blender.
Boil the water using a tea kettle.
Add all the ingredients to a high-speed blender, including the hot water. Blend until smooth, between 15-30 seconds.
Carefully remove the lid of the blender (there will be steam). Pour the cocoa in your favorite cup and enjoy.
This drink is made with almond butter, making it perfect for those with a weaker blender. It is sweetened with dates, so to make it very easy to blend, I’d recommend using a liquid sweetener to taste. Maple syrup works well in this recipe.
You could try using different types of nut butters. I love hazelnut butter, but cashew butter and peanut butter could be good as well.
This recipe is easily adaptable. Feel free to add more or less cocoa to taste. You can also use different sweeteners or nut butters as mentioned above. Make it your own!

I've made your recipe twice. Thank you for putting this recipe together. I did make some modifications to personalize and use what I already had in my pantry. I substituted plain almond milk, coconut butter and date syrup. Quite yummy, especially with weather turning cooler.
Hi Claire, thank you for your feedback! I'm so happy it turned out well with those substitutions. Enjoy! :)
Love how simple, quick and delicious this is. No weird ingredients or sauce pan!
I'm so happy you like it! Thank you for leaving your feedback. :)
