Homemade Vegan Mayonnaise

I first thought about making vegan mayonnaise when I tried the one at my favorite vegetarian restaurant (Calactus in Moncton). Since then, I’ve made some many times using tofu. That’s right, tofu.

Did I lose some of you already?! Please don’t give up on me yet!

It’s very simple. All you need is tofu, grapeseed oil, apple cider vinegar, lemon and mustard powder. Only 5 ingredients! Even better, this recipe requires only 5 minutes to make. It’s also a lot cheaper than store-bought vegan mayo. You can’t go wrong with that!

Here are my suggestions for this recipe:

  • Add garlic and herbs to give it a flavor boost!
  • Use it as a creamy salad dressing. You can add a bit more water or oil to make it less thick if you prefer.
  • Use it instead of your regular mayonnaise in sandwiches.
  • Add Sriracha to make a spicy dip for your fries or make an avocado aioli like this one.
  • My favorite way to use it: veggie burgers! I’ve got a good recipe coming later this week. 😉
  • Unlike regular mayonnaise, this one is actually good on it’s own… I had to try it!

See? It can’t be that bad! You don’t even have to be vegan to enjoy this mayonnaise. Just comparing the nutrition facts should be motivation enough to try this one.

  • Hi Caroline,

Do you think I can use regular mustard from the tube instead of powder. Not sure if I can find that. Heading for some groceries soon. Can't wait to make these! :)

    Thank you!

    • Hi Dawn! I have tried it with regular mustard and it turned out fine! You might need to adjust the quantity a bit, but I suggest that you start with the same amount as the powder and add more to taste. Let me know how it turns out! :)

    • You could use any light tasting oil. I'm thinking avocado oil or canola oil would be good. If you like the taste of olive oil, it would work too, but it would have a stronger taste. :)
